In
1981 I had just started working as a freelance graphic designer. Conversations
with a friend of a friend lead me to meet up with Rip Curl. They were planning
to break more into the surf wear market. I was a keen surfer and had just started
printing my own tee shirt designs. They liked what I was doing and asked me to
come up with a few ideas.
And so I did, and kept coming
up with more ideas as they asked, over the next 10 years. There was no grand
plan, no marketing, we just produced what we liked.
Sometimes my designs were held
over for 12 months as they thought that they were a bit ‘out there’. ‘Wave
Classic 83’ and ‘After the Holocaust’ are good examples of this.
I worked on summer designs in
winter and winter designs in summer for Rip Curl until about 1991, when I moved
on to warmer waters near Byron Bay.
